The Capsule Wardrobe

Web Analytics

In 1973, the term “capsule wardrobe” was coined by British style expert Susie Faux, owner of the London boutique called Wardrobe. This concept has also been referred to as clusters, units, and modules.  No matter what the name, the same idea has existed for years in France and England where closets were very small. This is the ultimate “less is more” philosophy.

WHAT?

A Capsule Wardrobe is a well-chosen, small group of clothes that mix and match into a variety of combinations to meet your daily needs.

A capsule wardrobe consists of:

  • Well-fitting garments that you love!
  • Minimal number of coordinated separates (about 5-22 garments)
  • A flattering neutral color palette
  • Garments with little decoration or embellishment
  • Versatile pieces that can be worn in a variety of ways
  • Timeless quality classics that can be worn for many years

WHY?

The benefits of having a capsule wardrobe are:

  • Increased closet space which is great for small or “no closet” closets
  • Getting dressed is easy, fast, and fun again
  • No more wasted purchases that remain unworn
  • More outfit possibilities that were not obvious with an overstuffed closet
  • Reduced upkeep and maintenance
  • Less confusion as you can see at a glance what your choices are
  • More money as you are not buying mistake after mistake
  • More time as less time spent shopping and being seduced by sales

Having a capsule wardrobe is liberating. It is a great way of clearing your mind and helping you to focus (on other things).~~~ Susie Faux

HOW?

You may need to create several different capsules depending on your life style and your wardrobe needs. If you coordinate your capsules with each other, your clothing outfit options will be maximized greatly.

Possible capsule options:

  • Career/business
  • Weekend/casual
  • Formal/entertaining
  • Sports/exercise

Less is more, especially in your closet. A capsule wardrobe has become the new luxury. You will never have to say “I have nothing to wear.” Instead, you will say, “What do I get to wear today?

Happy Capsuling!
